Working Holiday visa

The Working Holiday Visa is the best option for young people who want to visit Australia and spend up to one year in the country to work and travel.

There are two subclasses: the right type of visa depends on the nationality of the Au Pair.

Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) to Australia

To be eligible for this type of visa, applicants must have citizenship and passport from one of the following countries:

Belgium; Cyprus; Denmark; Germany; Estonia; Finland; France; Hong Kong; Ireland; Italy; Japan; Canada; Korea; Malta; Netherlands; Norway; Sweden; Taiwan; United Kingdom.

The other basic requirements are:

  • age: between 18 – 30 years old
  • not married and no children
  • never entered Australia on a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) before
  • enough savings during the length of your working holiday (about 5000 AUD)
  • enough money to cover the travel cost to Australia and back

Additional requirements include:

  • Health requirements: Au Pairs must be in good health and meet certain requirements depending on several factors, such as the length of their stay, the country of origin, and the time spent abroad during the last five years.
  • Health insurance: Au Pairs needs to purchase private health insurance, otherwise they will have to cover all medical treatment on their own.
  • Biometrics: Au Pairs from certain countries might have to provide biometrics along with the visa application.

Application for the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)

  1.  Valid passport: Au Pairs need to have a valid passport to start the visa application. It should also remain valid for at least 6 months afterward as well.

  3.  Visa application: Au Pairs can submit their application both online and in person. However, the online application is usually the easiest way.
  4. Application outcome: the authorities will check the application and send the decision through post or email. In case of an unsuccessful application, the fee will not be returned.

Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) to Australia

To be eligible for this type of visa, applicants must have citizenship and passport from one of the following countries:

Argentina; Bangladesh; Chile; China; Indonesia; Israel; Malaysia; Poland; Portugal; Slovak Republic; Slovenia; Spain; Thailand; Turkey; USA; Uruguay.

The other basic requirements are:

  • age: between 18 – 30 years old
  • never entered Australia on a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 417) before
  • enough savings during the length of your working holiday (about 5000 AUD)
  • enough money to cover the travel cost to Australia and back

Additional requirements include:

  • Health requirements: Au Pairs must be in good health and meet certain requirements depending on several factors, such as the length of their stay, the country of origin, and the time spent abroad during the last five years.
  • Health insurance: Au Pairs needs to purchase private health insurance, otherwise they will have to cover all medical treatment on their own.
  • Educational requirements: the requirements depend on the Au Pair’s citizenship, but usually any evidence that the Au Pair has completed at least 2 or 3 years of undergraduate university study is enough to receive the visa.
  • Language requirements: the Au Pair needs to have functional English language to apply for the visa.
  • Letter of support: with the exceptions of Au Pairs from Israel and China, Au Pairs need to have a letter of support from their government
  • Biometrics: Au Pairs from certain countries might have to provide biometrics along with the visa application.
